NFL: Matthews signs extension with Packers

The Packers locked up linebacker Clay Matthews with a long-term extension yesterday. The team did not announce terms of the extension, reported to be for five years, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said the deal is worth $66 million. That would put Matthews on par with Dallas outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, whose contract also averages $13 million per year.

NCAA: Hardaway Jr. declares for NBA draft

Tim Hardaway Jr. announced he will forgo his senior season at Michigan and enter the NBA Draft, joining teammate and national player of the year Trey Burke, who announced his departure last week.

Florida Gulf Coast hired Joe Dooley, an assistant coach at the University of Kansas, to be its new head basketball coach. Dooley is replacing Andy Enfield, who left for the same position at USC. Enfield led the university to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

ETC: Beltran breaks up Burnett’s no-hit bid

A. J. Burnett lost his no-hit bid when Carlos Beltran doubled with two out in the seventh inning as the Pirates blanked the Cardinals 5-0. Burnett, 36, did record his 2,000th strikeout, fanning Beltran in the second inning.

Jeff Francoeur had an RBI single as the Royals snapped the Braves’ 10-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory,.

Seventeen-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot an 8-under 64 in Kapolei, Hawaii, to take a one-stroke lead over Suzann Pettersen and Hee Kyung Seo after the first round of the LPGA Lotte Championship. Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old amateur from New Zealand, shot a 66.

Real Madrid has passed Manchester United as the most valuable soccer team in Forbes’ annual estimates. Forbes valued Real Madrid at $3.3 billion, up from last year’s estimate of $1.88 billion. Manchester United was second at $3.17 billion.
