Weiner’s fundraising goes limp but ideas for campaign on the rise

A new campaign finance filing shows former Rep. Anthony Weiner hasn’t been raising money in recent months toward a potential New York City mayoral run. But he has been paying for a writer to hone his ideas and other trappings of a possible campaign.

Weiner’s filing for mid-March to mid-May was released Wednesday. It doesn’t show any new fundraising. Weiner already has more than $4.8 million left over from his near-campaign in 2009.

The new filing shows he’s continuing to rent an office he’s had since last year and pay web and phone expenses. The filing also lists a $5,000 payment to a playwright who worked on his list of ideas for improving the city. He published the document online last month.

Weiner didn’t immediately respond to an email message.
