‘Star Trek’ alumni turning to Kickstarter for new show

A group of “Star Trek” alumni hope to boldly go where no man has gone before — and finance a new TV show entirely with contributions from fans.

Writer David Gerrold and producer David Fein have until June 2 to raise $650,000 through “crowd-funding” website Kickstarter.com for their new science fiction series “The Star Wolf.”

Kickstarter — which allows individuals to contribute seed money to projects they believe in — helped producers drum up $5.7 million for a new “Veronica Mars” movie in March.

“Our goal is to make a pilot and use that to raise the money to make more episodes,” Fein tells The Post.

So far, “The Star Wolf” campaign has only raised $61,000.

But the team — which also includes sci fi writer DC (Dorothy) Fontana — has received public endorsements from “Star Trek’s” Leonard Nemoy and “Big Bang Theory” producer Bill Prady.

The story — about a crew aboard an intergalactic space ship — actually began as part of a rejected “Star Trek” script that Gerrold wrote back in 1967.

It takes place “at least a thousand years in the future,” he says. “Our enemies are genetically augmented and modified humans who believe they are the master race.”

“The hero of the show is the executive officer who knows how to run the [ship] better than anybody because he put himself through school building starships. But they won’t give him command of the ship and they keep putting incompetent captains over him.”

Michelle Nichols has signed on as Admiral O’Hara. George Takei is in talks to join as a guest star.

Gerrold says he has made the rounds pitching his show to different networks twice since 1999.

“We got a lot of favorable responses, but they just didn’t want to open their checkbooks because of this or that.”

“The studio system wants franchises and blockbusters. They don’t want to take chances on things people have never done before. This is something a lot different than we have seen in science fiction before.”
