2 bodies pulled from water near Hoboken

Two young men drowned in the Hudson River early Sunday after one jumped into the cold water and the other tried to rescue him, it was reported.

Elias Serrano, 20, dove off a pier near the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken and was drowning at around 5:30 a.m. when friend Edwin Cruz, 24, went in to save him, The Jersey Journal said.

Both men’s bodies were pulled out of the water by NYPD divers at around 8 a.m., officials said.

Another friend, Angel Duran, had been on the pier with the men and others when he heard a splash, the paper said. He said he, too, tried to leap in to aid Serrano but was restrained by the others.

He would not discuss why Serrano had jumped in.

Serrano’s family went to Hoboken police headquarters, and his mother collapsed after hearing about his tragic death, the paper said.
