The NYPD is getting $2 million from the Department of Investigation to buy video equipment that will help prevent incidents like the Boston Marathon bombing.
“The benefit to having the mobile camera equipment in place when and where the NYPD needs it, such as marathons . . . is an important proactive measure for public safety,” said DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn.
The funds are part of the forfeiture awarded to the DOI by the US Department of Justice as a result of the CityTime scandal, officials said.
The transfer was announced yesterday and will give cops mobile cameras for crime and terrorism prevention.
The cameras will also be used to expand a 2-year-old pilot program initiated in The Bronx, in which police tape interviews and confessions, so juries can observe suspects and witnesses making the recorded statements.
“Commissioner Kelly’s decision to use some of the funds to expand the videotaping program will have valuable benefits to defendants and police officers by providing an evidentiary tool for everyone . . . to examine what was or was not said in a police interview,” Gill Hearn said.
