Baltimore fans behave; arrests in San Francisco

While at least 25 people were arrested in San Francisco for public intoxication, giddy Ravens fans were whooping and hollering and dancing in the streets of Baltimore following their team’s 34-31 Super Bowl XLVII victory over the 49ers last night in New Orleans.

Baltimore police reported no disturbances or damage in the city. Footage from local television stations showed police mounted on horseback circling around the crowds to maintain order.

In San Francisco, disappointed fans in the Mission District stumbled out of bars after the loss. Police said in a statement the number of arrests was from a preliminary count, and a final count would not be available until today.

Last night, dozens of officers and a helicopter patrolled the Mission District, which had been the center of celebrations and damage caused by fans after the Niners’ NFC Championship Game two weeks ago and the Giants’ World Series win last fall.

When the Giants won the World Series, a city bus was set ablaze, cars were overturned and bonfires were in trash containers and in streets. About three dozen people were arrested.

In Baltimore, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said the city will hold a parade tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. The parade begins at City Hall and end at M&T Stadium.

As the Super Bowl drew to a close, dozens of police and sheriff’s deputies fanned out on foot, motorcycles and patrol cars. Despite the large number of people on sidewalks, most appeared to be well-behaved.

Fans packed into Mother’s Federal Hill Grille belted out a rendition of the Queen song “We are the champions,’’ as bartenders sprayed purple party string into the air.
