Sen. Romney? Tagg, you’re it!

WASHINGTON — America hasn’t seen the last of the Romneys.

Massachusetts Republicans, scrambling to find a star candidate to run for the US Senate seat left vacant by the appointment of John Kerry as secretary of state, are looking to former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, or one of his five sons to jump into the race.

“I’ve had several people call me and ask me about Ann Romney,” Ron Kaufman, a longtime Romney friend and aide, told The Boston Herald.

Ann Romney proved popular on the campaign trail last year as a cheerleader for her husband, who once governed the state. And Romney’s son Tagg is a successful businessman who served as a campaign adviser to his dad and sat in for him on some campaign trail appearances.

Her standing was enhanced, particularly among women voters, by the inspiring story of her battle with multiple sclerosis and her stellar speech during the Republican National Convention.

Even Kaufman, however, called the Ann Romney move unlikely.

“The timing is not great, and I don’t think she sees herself as a candidate,” Kaufman told the newspaper.

Former Sen. Scott Brown decided last week not to run for the seat.
