HOOPS: Louisville romps

Russ Smith scored 18 points, Peyton Siva added 14 and No. 12 Louisville (18-4, 6-3 Big East) shot 52 percent to run away from visiting No. 25 Marquette (15-5, 6-2) 70-51.

Bryce Cotton hit the winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left and scored 18 points to lead Providence to a 55-52 win over host Villanova (13-9, 4-5).

Austin Hollins hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left, lifting No. 23 Minnesota (17-5, 5-4 Big Ten) to a 62-59 victory over visiting Iowa (14-8, 3-6).

MLB: Millwood to retire

Kevin Millwood reportedly will retire from baseball after a 16-year career in the majors. The 38-year-old right-hander went 160-152 in his career pitching for the Braves, Phillies, Indians, Rangers, Orioles, Rockies and Mariners.

Obit: ‘Pepper’ Paire-Davis, 88

Lavonne “Pepper” Paire-Davis, a star of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s and an inspiration for the Geena Davis character in the movie 1992 “A League of Their Own,” died Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 88.

HOCKEY: Hejduk’s milestone

Colorado forward Milan Hejduk will play his 1,000th NHL game tonight. He will become the first player in franchise history to play 1,000 regular season games in an Avalanche jersey. The 36-year old will be only the second player in Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise history to skate in 1,000 regular season games, joining Joe Sakic, who dressed in 1,378 games (508 with Quebec, 870 with Colorado).

Jerry York, the winningest coach in NCAA hockey history, looks to guide the Boston College Eagles to their fourth consecutive Beanpot crown starting with a first-round game against Harvard tonight in Boston. Boston University plays Northeastern in the first game.

TENNIS: Querrey lifts U.S.

Sam Querrey beat Thiago Alves 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to give the United States a dramatic 3-2 victory over Brazil yesterday in Jacksonville, Fla., and a spot in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. The U.S. will host Serbia in the next round in Boise, Idaho, from April 5-7.

Querrey stepped up after teammate John Isner lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to Thomaz Bellucci earlier yesterday, forcing a deciding fifth match. It was the first time since 2000 that a U.S. team needed to win the fifth match to advance.

Unseeded Mona Barthel of Germany won her second career title, upsetting top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the Open GDF Suez final in Paris.

Sloane Stephens withdrew from the U.S. Fed Cup team’s matches this weekend against Italy because of a strained abdominal muscle.

SOCCER: Liverpool earns tie

Liverpool did Manchester United a big favor in the Premier League, holding Manchester City to a 2-2 draw to leave the defending champions nine points behind their neighbors in the title race.

Tottenham beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in the other game and is now just a point behind third-place Chelsea.
