Crowded F train may return to the fast lane: officials

The MTA is considering bringing back express service on the F train, officials said today.

The often-crowded line that travels through some of Brooklyn’s hippest neighborhoods already has express tracks, which were used in the 1980’s to bring riders from King’s Highway to Borough Hall in just four stops.

The transit agency will examine whether the tracks can be restored to service once it completes the Culver Viaduct rehab at the end of this year.

Aaron Stern, director of New York City Transit’s Office of Management and Budget, revealed the plan today at a City Council Budget Hearing.

Express service might be a boon to straphangers who use certain stations, but it could cause a decrease in other stations because the MTA only has a limited number of trains.

“We would be taking the same ridership level and redistributing it to both services,” Stern said at the hearing.
