Assembly OKs $9 minimum

ALBANY — State Assembly Democrats yesterday approved upping New York’s $7.25-an-hour minimum wage to $9 with annual indexing for inflation, mirroring President Obama’s federal proposal.

But the bill needs approval from the Senate, where Republican leader Dean Skelos opposes the hike, saying it would cost businesses $2,800 per full-time employee — $480 million in all — and force companies to lay off workers.

Gov. Cuomo has included a minimum-wage increase to $8.75, without indexing, as part of his state budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins next month.
