Google releases designer high-tech specs

Google’s latest high-tech specs come with a designer price tag.

The tech giant on Tuesday unveiled a haute couture line of its Google Glass smart glasses with input from designer Diane von Furstenberg.

The DVF label specs come in five different frames and eight different shades, and will be sold by Google and Net-a-Porter starting June 23.

The basic device costs $1,500. A pair of the designer frames will tack on another $225 and the shades will add $150.

For that price, consumers can buy a 13-inch, top-of-the-line Macbook Pro with retina display screen and 2.6GHz processor — or two 11-inch MacBook Airs.

Google Glass wearers can check email and surf the Web as well as take pictures and video using only eye movements.

Price and appearance have been the biggest barriers to the specs entering the mainstream. Privacy concerns have also led some establishments to ban them to prevent wearers from surreptitiously filming others.

Google is trying to up its game as demand for wearable technologies grows. Research firm ON World predicted that one out of five adults will own some kind of wearable technology by next year.

ON World said watches are the most popular wearable product category followed by activity trackers, smart glasses, heart rate monitors and smart clothing.

Apple is expected to unveil a smart watch for sale later this year that will act as a fitness tool as well as a music player.
