Gov’s office probe not ‘the final word’ on Bridgegate: top NJ Dem

Lawmakers investigating New Jersey’s Bridgegate scandal will not be put off by the internal probe ordered by Gov. Chris Christie that cleared him of any role, a leading state Democrat said Monday.

“There is an inherent conflict with any internal review,” said John Wisniewski, chair of the state Assembly committee investigating the matter.

“Lawyers hired by the governor’s office to look at the governor’s office to say the governor did nothing wrong should not be the final word on this matter.”

Wisniewski said the legislative probe would continue despite findings by a team of lawyers that Christie (right) was not involved in plotting the shutdown or directing officials to close lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge.

The controversial lane closures, initially passed off as a traffic study, clogged Fort Lee streets for days.

The state spent $1 million in taxpayer money to hire a white-shoe law firm to conduct the Christie-backed investigation.
