Man killed crossing Long Island Expressway

A man was struck and killed by a minivan after he ran out of gas on the Long Island Expressway.

The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday. Suffolk County police say 24-year-old Ryan Marshall of Coram apparently ran out of gas between Exits 62 and 63 in Holtsville.

He was crossing the eastbound lanes when he was struck by a minivan driven by a county Social Services Department employee. The employee was not hurt and stayed at the scene.

Police say Marshall may have been trying to cross the expressway to get to a Suffolk County Highway Patrol officer who was stopped on the center median.

No charges were immediately filed. The investigation is ongoing.
