TAKE IT E-Z SPEEDING – PA’S WATCHING

Don’t speed along on those E-ZPass lanes. Big brother is watching.

The Port Authority said it will suspend the E-ZPass privileges of motorists who repeatedly speed through toll plazas on its Hudson River and Staten Island crossings.

Drivers are supposed to cruise along E-ZPass lanes at 5 miles an hour until the E-ZPass signal turns green.

“We know there are people who blow through the lanes at 30 to 40 miles an hour. We’re going to enforce the speed limit in the lanes,” said Joanne Crowley, the PA’s deputy director of bridges and tunnels.

Crowley said the lanes have transponders that clock the speed of vehicles.

“The primary reason we’re doing this is for the safety of our employees,” she said.

The PA said speeding is a problem at night and in the wee morning hours when traffic is light.

Under the new safety enforcement program expected to start in the spring, the PA will mail warning notices to first-time violators.

Repeat offenders will be stripped of their E-ZPass privileges.

The program will cover E-ZPass users who cross the George Washington, Goethals, Bayonne and Outerbridge crossings, and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.

The MTA’s city bridges and tunnels have gates in their toll lanes, so speeding isn’t a problem.

The PA won’t be installing gates, Crowley said, because it would defeat the purpose of E-ZPass.
