Mets closing in on deal with WOR-AM (710)

The Mets are closing in on a new radio home.

According to industry sources, the Mets are close to completing a deal with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment that would air games on WOR-AM (710) beginning next season.

Last month, the Mets ended a relationship with WFAN-AM (660) that dated to 1987, after the station reached an agreement with the Yankees to begin airing their games starting next year.

WOR is a 50,000-watt clear channel station that currently operates on a talk-show format and also broadcasts Rutgers football and basketball. The station last carried baseball from 1943-45 as the Yankees’ broadcast home.

As of now, the Mets’ radio broadcasts are not expected to be on a Clear Channel FM station — a departure from this past season, when the team could be heard on both 660 AM and 101.9 FM.

Howie Rose is expected to remain as the Mets’ lead play-by-play announcer, according to sources. It is not yet known whether his partner, Josh Lewin, will remain on the broadcasts.

It will mark the first time since 1986 the Mets will not be heard on WFAN, as they had carried the Mets’ broadcasts since they first went on the air in 1987.

Taking the place of the Mets on WFAN will be the Yankees, who are moving from WCBS-AM.

Clear Channel had bid on the Yankees’ radio broadcasts earlier this year, but lost out to CBS Radio.
