SWITCH IN NAMING NEWBORNS

Oh, baby, what a surprise! For the first time since 1956, Michael is not the most popular name for boys born in the city.

Daniel is the new No. 1.

The girls category also had new chart toppers: Isabella and Sophia replaced Ashley.

The city Health Department released its annual list of baby monikers yesterday, covering 128,961 births in 2007, and Daniel edged out Jayden, 865 to 846.

Michael, the reigning champ for half a century, came in third at 801.

The agency doesn’t speculate on why parents choose one name over another. But it does offer breakdowns by race and ethnicity that often reveal significant differences.

For example, Jayden was the first choice among boys for black and Hispanic parents, but it was only the 66th choice among whites.

Asian and Pacific Islanders selected Ryan as their favorite, while white parents stuck with Michael.
