JETS: BETWEEN THE HASHMARKS

TURNING POINT

Abram Elam’s 92-yard interception return for a touchdown on the final play of the first quarter gave the Jets a 13-7 lead that they would not relinquish.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Brett Favre, who threw an INT that was returned for a TD by Bills’ CB Jabari Greer in the fourth quarter, said, “It’s one of those games where we won the game and I didn’t throw a TD pass … at least to us.”

The INT was the third pick Favre has had returned for a TD this season and the NFL-high 300th INT of his career.

BREAKDOWN

It all started for the Jets on defense. They shut down the Buffalo running game (30 yards and a 1.8-yard average) and sacked Trent Edwards five times. Spooked by Favre’s 7 INTs in the previous three games, the Jets clearly utilized a more cautious, shorter passing attack. Their guile in the fourth quarter, particularly after Favre’s INT, defined the game for them as they took the next possession and went on their longest drive (8:41) of the season to seal the game. Eric Mangini was most happy about the “complete complementary” the Jets played with all three phases a factor.

UP NEXT

The Jets play the 2-6 Rams at home. The Rams had sparked their season under new coach Jim Haslett, winning two of three, until they were hammered by the Cardinals 34-13 this afternoon. This is a game the deeper and more talented Jets should win, which would take them to 6-3 entering their Nov. 13 rematch with the Patriots.
