SCHILLING: MCCAIN’S LIKE MY RED SOX

Campaigning with John McCain this weekend, Curt Schilling compared the big-spending Barack Obama team to the Yankees and reportedly said the Democratic Presidential candidate was more like Derek Jeter than Alex Rodriguez.

Appearing in New Hampshire on Sunday, Schilling said McCain’s lagging poll numbers heading into Election Day were similar to the odds faced by the pitcher’s 2004 Red Sox against the Yankees.

“The size of the payroll has nothing to do with the heart and talent of the team,” Schilling said, according to the Boston Herald. “They’d have you believe that we’re down 3-0, but let me tell you I have a little bit of experience with that and it doesn’t mean anything.”

The Red Sox became the first baseball team to come from 3-0 down to win a best-of-7 series, taking the 2004 ALCS from the Yankees on the way to their first world title in 86 years.

Also, Bostonherald.com reports “While Schilling said he believes Obama is well-intentioned — more of a Derek Jeter than an A-Rod — he questioned the Democrat’s judgment.”

McCain and Schilling became acquainted when the right-hander joined the Arizona Diamondbacks in the senator’s home state. The D’backs defeated the Yankees to win the 2001 World Series, and Schilling was co-MVP with Randy Johnson.

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins took the other side, making robo-calls in support of Obama in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, according to AOL.com.
