LAKE CITY

ONE of those Deep Dark Secret movies, the dull indie “Lake City” combines a wholly uninteresting family mystery with a wholly unconvincing crime drama.

Sissy Spacek stars as a drawlin’ Southern mom whose wayward son (Troy Garity) unexpectedly shows up at her house one day with a little boy of mysterious provenance. The older man is caught up in a drug deal that involves his wife (Drea De Matteo), a Hooters waitress and rock singer Dave Matthews (here billed as “David,” which must mean he has become a serious actor) as a lowlife.

Everyone is sighing and pulling faces about a hidden family drama that, after more than an hour of buildup, turns out to be a random act that means nothing. So for its climax, the movie gets everyone running around for a melodramatic chase full of laughable clichés.

Running time: 92 minutes. Rated R (profanity, violence). At the Quad, 13th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
