BIG MAC NOT ON KATIE’S MENU

ANY discussion of John McCain‘s dissing of David Letterman in favor of Katie Couric was conspicuously missing from Couric’s “Late Show” appearance last night.

It was Couric’s first visit to the show since McCain canceled a Letterman visit in September in favor of a sitdown interview with Couric.

At the time, McCain claimed he had to cancel Letterman to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis.

For more than 10 minutes last night, Letterman and Couric bantered about the election, and mostly about Sarah Palin.

But McCain’s headline-making gaffe – and his eventual apologetic return to “Late Show” last month – simply never came up.

A Letterman spokesman said the late-night host was not asked by Couric to steer clear of the McCain debacle – and that he never agrees to preconditions when conducting interviews.

After the initial McCain incident, Letterman showed an internal, live video of McCain being tended to by a makeup artist before the Couric interview.

He then mocked McCain mercilessly for several nights.
