MORE HEAT ON RANGEL

WASHINGTON – Critics of Rep. Charles Rangel are stepping up calls for House investigators to sift through his tax records after revelations that the tax committee chairman may have improperly taken a home tax credit.

A spokesman for House Republican Leader John Boehner said yesterday that his boss has watched with great interest as the embattled Harlem Democrat’s tax problems continue to pile up, including a new revelation in Sunday’s Post.

“Leader Boehner has called for a full investigation by the Ethics Committee of allegations concerning Congressman Rangel, because he believes those who write our tax laws have a responsibility to follow our tax laws,” said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel.

The Post reported Sunday that Rangel took a “homestead” tax break on a Washington, DC, house for years while also occupying multiple apartments in New York City, possibly running afoul of laws in both cities.

Rangel spokesman Emile Milne said yesterday that Rangel’s accountants are looking into the matter.
