SPIKE IN CITY WELFARE ROLLS

More New Yorkers signed up for welfare checks in October than in any other month this year, in keeping with an annual trend, records show.

An additional 5,607 city residents enrolled in the welfare program this past October, boosting the total to 339,936 from 334,329 in September, according to Human Resources Administration data.

The increase is in keeping with a recent trend that has October as the month with the highest number of recipients.

“There’s a lot of anecdotal thoughts about it . . . the summer is over, people might have had summer jobs,” said Patricia Smith, first deputy commissioner at the Human Resources Administration.
