CATCHING UP: JETS

The Jets made Jay Cutler look like John Elway and Shaun Hill look like Joe Montana.

The Gang Green goal Sunday is to shut down Bills backup QB J.P. Losman, expected to play for starter Trent Edwards, who has a groin injury.

But the Jets probably would settle for Losman not resembling Jim Kelly.

Cutler’s performance is excusable, Hill’s embarrassing, and if Losman has a similar performance it would be disgraceful. The Bills’ offense comes into the Meadowlands scoring six points combined in their previous two games, losses to the 49ers and Dolphins.

“It’s a function of everybody doing their job first,” Eric Mangini said of his defense.

“That’s really the most important thing, is just take care of whatever you have to take care of. Don’t worry about what somebody else has to take care of. Trust that he’s doing it and then the defense or the offense will work well. When you usually get into trouble, in either phase, is I want to make a play. Usually you do make a play, but it’s for the other team, because you’re in the gap that somebody else is supposed to be in.”

The biggest goat in the secondary has been rookie CB Dwight Lowery, who has been victimized in the Jets’ consecutive losses to the Broncos and 49ers. The losing streak has dropped the Jets into a three-way tie for first on top of the AFC East with the Patriots and Dolphins.

“No, it is tough, but we have to stay positive,” CB Darrelle Revis said when asked if the team was frustrated.

“This is not a 4-12 team like we were last year. We are 8-5. We are tied for first (in the division). We have to keep on moving and get wins. We are focused right now and this is a key game for us. It’s a rival game. The Buffalo games (are) always tight games at the end. We know what to expect from them. We have to look at ourselves and go out there and execute as best we can.” And though they don’t face a single dominant passing team in their final three games, improvements still need to be made if the Jets are going to win the division.

“We trust the guys that are back there,” Revis said. “I know the coaches are going to play the best players out there and that is the world we live in as defensive backs. One week I am (covering) Randy Moss and another I am on Lee Evans. You know your job is going to switch week-in and week-out. You have to be ready for the challenges.”
