RAINBOW ROOM WILL SHUT EATERY

The Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center is closing its restaurant after being hit hard by the economic downturn, according to a report.

The Cipriani family said they will shutter the Rainbow Grill, though part of it will remain open as a bar and banquet hall.

The cutback is being blamed on “the current economic crisis in New York and around the world, on top of an ongoing dispute with our landlord,” Cipriani’s chief operating officer, John Higgins, told WNBC-TV/Channel 4.

It was not clear when the eatery, which was opened in 1934 and is located on the 65th floor, will close, though Higgins said he hoped the closure will be “temporary.”

Cipriani had sought landmark protection for the Rainbow Room last August, which would have prevented it from being turned into office space by the building’s landlord Tishman Speyer, according to WNBC.
