PARTY LINES EXTEND TO ISRAEL

THE ISSUE: The disparity between Republican and Democratic support of Israel.

Kirsten Powers shows the anti-Israel mind-set of the Democrats in disclosing a recent Rasmussen Poll showing that a mere 31 percent of Democratic voters support Israel’s military action while 55 percent oppose it (“O’s Change Deficit,” PostOpinion, Jan. 6).

Soon enough, this rank-and-file opposition to Israel by the Democrats will be reflected by Democratic congressmen and senators.

Anyone who supports Israel’s right to exist is crazy to vote for Democrats.

Powers’ article makes selective use of a Rasmussen poll to create the impression that the American public is equally sympathetic to the Palestinians as it is to Israel.

While the poll shows that Americans are split as to whether Israel should have taken military action in Gaza, Powers does not mention that the poll also shows that Americans (including a plurality of Democrats) overwhelmingly (55-13) blame the Palestinians for the current situation in Gaza.

Years ago, Menachem Begin, then prime minister of Israel, was faced with the same demand with respect to another Arab group dedicated to Israel’s elimination. He said: “What should we negotiate – the terms of our own destruction?”

Liberals have always had difficulty identifying evil. In this case, they are poorly informed as well.

Israel implored Hamas to extend the six-month period of calm arranged by Egyptian intermediaries, which expired in mid-December. Hamas replied with rocket salvos to Israeli civilian targets.

If the situation weren’t so serious, liberal ignorance would provoke laughter instead of dismay.
