GRISTEDES LOSES ‘TRADER’ BATTLE

This town’s only big enough for one Trader.

Supermarket chain Gristedes cannot call its shameless Trader Joe’s knock-off Trader John’s, a judge ruled yesterday, a day before the West 14th Street store’s opening.

Trader Joe’s lawyer, Dale Cendali, accused Gristedes of intentionally ripping off the popular South Pacific-themed supermarket, down to its sign’s red lettering.

“Of all the possible names . . . he just had to pick the name of a store a few blocks away with a long line of people outside,” she said.

Gristedes’ lawyer Larry Weinstein said no one would mistake the new store for Trader Joe’s because it wouldn’t carry any Trader Joe’s-brand products.
