BRAVEST: WE’RE NOT SPIDEY

Members of the FDNY aren’t superheroes, a frustrated firefighter declared yesterday after heated cross-examination at the trial of a building owner and tenants charged in the deadly 2005 “Black Sunday” fire.

“We’re not Spider-Man,” Jeffrey Cool, 41, said while being questioned by prosecutors in Bronx Supreme Court. “We don’t have another web to spin once we’re over the side of the building.”

Cool and five fellow firefighters, including Lt. Curtis Meyran, 46, and John Bellew, 37, tried to pull off a feat worthy of the comic-book web-spinner as they fled from a burning building on Jan. 23, 2005.

All six fell about 50 feet to the pavement. Meyran and Bellew died. Cool and three others survived.

Yesterday, Cool was grilled by lawyers for the people charged with contributing to the deaths by putting up an illegal wall in an apartment that blocked the firefighters.

Lawyer Neal Comer, who represents the building’s management company, tried in vain to get Cool to criticize the FDNY for not providing special ropes to get down the side of the building.

Cool also addressed why they hadn’t used a “roof rope” that firefighters had brought to the scene.

He said using one requires permission from a supervising officer, and takes time to prepare.

“It’s the last resort,” he said.
