BIG FAT NO TO ‘FAT TAX’

ALBANY – New York voters are increasingly opposed to Gov. Paterson’s plan to slap a “fat tax” on sweet soft drinks, a new poll yesterday showed.

The Quinnipiac University survey found that voters, by 64 to 32 percent, reject Paterson’s efforts – outlined as part of his anti-obesity crusade most recently in last week’s State of the State Address – to impose an 18 percent sales tax on sodas and other soft drinks sweetened with sugar.

Three weeks ago, a Quinnipiac poll found 60 percent of voters opposing the tax, to 37 percent in favor.
