Using a large crane and rigging, crews with Weeks Marine gently set the engine on a crane platform. Shards of metal and wiring are hanging out of it and a large portion of the outer shell is missing.

It didn’t appear to be leaking any oil or fuel, though a steady stream of water gushed from it as it was lifted up.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators will now examine the engine as part of their probe of last week’s crash-landing of the Airbus A320.

The Charlotte, N.C.-bound plane splashed down in the river after hitting a flock of birds and losing thrust in both engines. It happened shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. All 155 people on board survived.
