CITY POLS TAKE A GANDER AT HOW TO GOOSE THE GEESE

City officials yesterday proposed a three-pronged attack on geese – using guns, grease and gravel.

“This is a critical public safety issue that must be addressed,” said Queens Councilman David Weprin. “We must do what it takes to protect the lives of both airline passengers and individuals on the ground.”

EDITORIAL: GET THOSE GEESE GONE

Weprin urged city and airport officials to reduce the airport geese population. Weprin said oiling unhatched eggs would prevent them from hatching, and pouring gravel over fields would keep many from returning.

A bird strike took out both engines of an Airbus A320, which crash-landed in the Hudson River after taking off Jan. 15 from La Guardia Airport.

Any plan should also include the shooting of Canada geese, a common practice at area airports, Weprin said.

Weprin was joined by state Sen. Eric Adams and Hiram Monserrate. The Port Authority, which operates the airports, currently uses traps and sonic deterrence devices to keep the birds away, Monserrate said.
