BRONX TO BE GRAND AGAIN

The economy may be tanking, but that didn’t stop City Hall yesterday from proposing to turn a gritty South Bronx district into a neighborhood of high-rises, lofts and parks.

Now industrial, the 30 square blocks just south of Yankee Stadium along the Grand Concourse would be rezoned to allow for 3,400 housing units overlooking the Harlem River.

The area bounded by East 149th Street, Morris Avenue and the river currently has more warehouses, car-repair shops and vacant lots than residents.

Blocks with river views would sprout towers up to 40 stories tall, and the concourse would get some buildings six to 12 stories high.
