METS EYE LEFTY RELIEVER OHMAN

Omar Minaya confirmed this week that the Mets remain in the market for a low-priced left-handed reliever, and that reliever might turn out to be Will Ohman.

The Mets’ GM contacted Ohman’s agent on Wednesday to discuss a potential contract, but the Amazin’s are likely to have competition from the rival Phillies for the lefty’s services.

Ohman, 31, was 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 58″ innings with the Braves last season after spending his first five years in the big leagues with the Cubs.

The Mets are looking to round out their bullpen after the recent trade of Scott Schoeneweis to Arizona left Pedro Feliciano as the only left-hander. That has prompted Minaya to look at Ohman and Joe Beimel, among others, but Minaya said he likes the recently signed Valerio de los Santos.

Meanwhile, the Mets agreed to terms with journeyman righty reliever Elmer Dessens yesterday. Dessens, 38, agreed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training next week.

Top prospect Fernando Martinez returned to New York yesterday for tests on a sore elbow that will cause him to miss the rest of the Caribbean Series.
