ELITE-SCHOOL FEARS EASE

Fears that the tanking economy could drive private- and parochial-school kids to the city’s elite public high schools in droves weren’t backed up by Department of Education data.

Applications from kids in nonpublic schools to the likes of Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech high schools edged up only slightly this year, to 4,553 from 4,470 last year.

The minimal uptick came despite reports of a surge in requests for financial aid at both parochial and private schools.

Overall, 6,106 students received an offer to attend the city’s nine specialized high schools in September – up from 5,991 students last year.
