CLASS SIZE HAS GROWTH SPURT

Despite a dip in enrollment and an infusion of state funds, the city’s public schools saw class sizes increase this year in almost every elementary- and middle-school grade for the first time in years, new data show.

Average class size edged up by as much as .4 students on almost every level from kindergarten through eighth grade. Sixth grade stayed the same, while fourth dropped by .1 students compared to last year.

For the second straight year, the city earmarked nearly $150 million in state aid toward reducing class sizes.

Enrollment has dropped by about 6,000 students – to 1,029,459 – since last year.
