AMISH SHOPS IN OT ‘BILK’

The upscale Amish Market supermarket chain has agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle charges that it bilked 550 employees out of overtime, officials said yesterday.

Acting on a tip, the state Labor Department said it found that many workers were clocking 45 to 60 hours a week but were not paid time and a half. State law requires time and a half when a worker puts in more than 40 hours a week.

Under the settlement, current and former employees will receive payments ranging from $300 to $15,000, officials said. One worker who was fired after cooperating with investigators will receive $26,000 in lost wages, they said.

The agreement affects eight stores in Manhattan, Queens and Westchester and Dutchess counties. The Zeytinz store at 24 West 40th St., which owes $300,000, has yet to agree to pay. The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 tipped the Labor Department.
