FRANCESA & KELLERMAN WOULD BE EGO MANIA

IS WFAN mega enough for two afternoon show megalomaniacs? We may soon find out.

Two, four, six, eight; stand up, sit down, spec-u-late!

Max Kellerman, whose resignation was accepted and announced yesterday by ESPN-1050 Radio, appears pointed toward WFAN, perhaps to work as Mike Francesa’s sidekick, backup, titular equal, water (Perrier) boy or something or other in place of Chris Russo, departed from WFAN and released into the solar system since August.

A Kellerman rep, according to radio and TV sources, had been speaking with FAN.

While Francesa the Great & Powerful is known to like Kellerman (at least for now), both men are so thoroughly impressed with themselves that placing them in the same studio at the same time without the presence of sharpshooters armed with elephant tranquilizers would be ill-advised. In a medium that accentuates the self-smitten, Francesa and Kellerman are standouts.

WFAN Program Director Mark Chernoff yesterday told The Post’s Michael Shain that he did not have any previous knowledge that Kellerman would be leaving 1050. When asked if FAN is interested in Kellerman, Chernoff said, “No comment.”

Kellerman, in his three years with 1050, made sure to quickly dissolve his most charming and appealing moments through his steady self-portrayals of a commercial radio alpha male.

And he doesn’t play well with others. Brian Kenny, Kellerman’s colleague and pal from ESPN’s national TV side, was brought in by 1050 to co-host with Kellerman, but departed, 11 months later, an ex-pal.

At 10 a.m., yesterday, the start of Kellerman’s slot, 1050 announced that he’d left by mutual agreement. That came days after Kellerman’s 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. show was shortened by an hour. Brandon Tierney, another fellow who spends more time telling listeners how slick he is than proving it, will replace Kellerman for now.

New York sports radio makes for such a strange and convoluted brew that Francesa’s p.m. drive competitor on 1050, Michael Kay, is also the lead Yankees announcer on YES, which simulcasts Francesa’s radio show as it’s heard head-to-head with Kay’s radio show. It’s kinda like your Best Man and Worst Enemy being the same man.
