RED BULLS SIGN ALBERT CELADES

The Red Bulls’ defensive makeover took a huge step forward yesterday with the signing of former Spanish World Cup midfielder Albert Celades. The 33-year-old played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid, and sources confirmed that he’s in New York and put the finishing touches on a contract.

He had returned to Spain earlier to be with his wife, who is expecting. But now he has signed his deal and will likely be at practice today and announced officially as part of the club.

Red Bull Sporting Director Jeff Agoos had said while he views Celades more as a central midfielder, he can also play central defense. Defensive midfield is already crowded with Seth Stammler, Luke Sassano and Juan Pietravallo, but Celades brings a different level of quality.

He is one of the most prolific winners to have signed with MLS, having played in the 1998 World Cup with Spain and having captured 14 titles during his pro career, including the 2002 Champions League.

The club is also expected to add former El Salvadoran captain Alfredo Pacheco and 24-year-old Costa Rican National Team starter Carlos Johnson to their back line in the coming days.
