GOVERNORS IS. SHOWDOWN

This summer could end before it begins at one of New York’s hottest tourist spots if the state fails to uphold its end of a funding agreement, Mayor Bloomberg warned yesterday.

Governors Island, set to open on May 30 for boating, concerts and other warm-weather activities, may shut down if Gov. Paterson does not include $6 million in his budget by April 1, the mayor said.

“The state is working with the city to resolve the funding issue,” said Paterson spokeswoman Erin Duggin.

But Ronay Menschel, who sits on the island’s board of directors, which yesterday unanimously voted on a $12 million budget, said, “It’s sometimes been a struggle for Governors Island to hold a priority in the celestial world of the state.”
