Girls volleyball roundup: Dodgeball the motivation for Kearney victory

The Bishop Kearney girls volleyball team has a favorite sport and it might not be what you guess.

“All they want to do is play dodgeball,” coach Kristin Wulff said. “It’s like an aerobic sport when they play, though. It’s fun to watch. They get really competitive with it.”

Wulff is constantly setting goals outside of winning for the Tigers, who have not lost a league match in 13 years, and senior Caroline Rooney had a bright idea Thursday.

“If they reach their goal, they get to play dodgeball instead of running for warm-ups tomorrow in practice,” Wulff said.

The goal in question Thursday was getting eight kills per set. Sure enough, Kearney exceeded that total in a 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 win against Bishop Ford in CHSAA Brooklyn. Christina Shalhoub had eight kills, Deirdre Smith had six kills and three aces and Meaghan McGoorty had four kills for the Tigers (4-0). Bridget Kinane added 21 assists and four digs.

“It totally worked today,” Wulff said.

Dodgeball it is.
