Defending America

* It is necessary to provide an important correction to Peter Brookes’ assessment of the US missile-defense system (“Biden’s Missile-Defense Missteps,” PostOpinion, Oct. 27).

Contrary to Brookes’ assertion, with our long-range interceptors currently deployed in Alaska and California, we already have the capability to defend the United States, including the entire East Coast, from a potential Iranian ICBM attack.

The new missile- defense approach — unanimously recommended by the secretary of defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff and approved by President Obama — will further strengthen our defense against a future Iranian ICBM threat, with its forward-based sensors and its use of “early intercept” technology.

Our phased, adaptive approach will result in a proven, cost-effective missile-defense system to defend the United States, our deployed forces, our allies and friends.
