Arne joins NY charter-cap flap

Education Secretary Arne Duncan yesterday questioned the wisdom of a New York law that limits the number of charter schools — and he warned that federal education aid will be doled out only to places prepared to “challenge the status quo.”

“If something has demonstrated to have made a difference in people’s lives, why would you say there couldn’t be more of that?” Duncan, who was in Manhattan for a conference with the Harlem Children’s Zone community group, told The Post.

With Washington on the verge of awarding an unprecedented $4 billion to states for the overhaul of their school systems, the New York law capping the amount of charter schools at 200 has come under fire.

Duncan said the exact rules the states will have to follow to qualify for the money are still being finalized.
