ONE of three original specialized schools focusing on science and math. Highly competitive – students should expect five hours of homework a night. Founding member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology. Giant building with packed classes – the school has nearly 5,000 students. Students declare a major from a variety of disciplines, including biomedicine, chemistry, environmental science, pre-med, social science research and electrical engineering, among others. In 2007, the graduating class earned $1.3 million in scholarships and grants, and 88% of students earned advanced Regents diplomas. Focus on research – school had 23 semifinalists and two finalists in Intel since 1998, and 18 finalists, including three “top 10” finishes, since the competition began. Competitive sports, lots of clubs. Its 3,100-seat auditorium is third only to Radio City Music Hall in size in the city. Stats were on the decline and a former principal resigned amid battles with his teachers, but new principal Randy Asher has gotten good reviews, and numbers are heading back up.
