ALTHOUGH this small, new specialized school focuses on science and engineering, its humanities offerings are also very successful – last year, Chancellor Joel Klein visited to congratulate the school on 100% of students scoring at least an 85 on the English Regents. Students are exposed to lots of reading and writing in a program developed by lead English teacher Dr. Ruthie Stern of Columbia Teachers College. Wide variety of electives and programs, including a renowned collaboration with Mt. Sinai Hospital that allows juniors to learn advanced research lab techniques at the hospital, and seniors to do rounds. Six-month elective course with City College and Memorial Sloan-Kettering called “Cancer In Society” allows kids to do serious independent research, a prime focus. School had one Siemens semifinalist and two NY Science and Engineering Fair finalists last year. Staff includes engineer Andy Podell. All kids accepted to college, including MIT.
