Giants sign Aussie punter

The Giants aren’t showing Jeff Feagles the door, but yesterday they did depart from their previous game-plan with the signing of punter Jy Bond, an Australian Rules Football player.

Feagles has been so ensconced on the roster that the Giants the past years didn’t even bother to bring another punter into training camp. Feagles, though, is 44 years old, looking forward to his 23rd NFL season, coming off the most inconsistent of his seven years with the Giants and currently an unrestricted free agent.

“They want to create some competition for me and I am open to that,” Feagles told The Post. “I’ve been competing for 22 years. Another year won’t make a difference.”

At the start of free agency the Giants told Feagles they wanted him back and he is confident a deal will eventually get done.

“It’s just taking a little bit of time,” said Feagles, who made $1.5 million last season. “It will all work itself out.”

As the Giants try to work out a new contract with Feagles, they have added an interesting punting prospect.

The 6-foot-2, 216-pound Bond never has kicked in an NFL game. The 30-year old native of the suburbs of Melbourne is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Aussies Sav Rocca (Eagles) and Darren Bennett (Chargers) as NFL punters. Bond, who has trained with both of those punters, was with the Dolphins last preseason from April through mid-June. His father and grandfather played elite level Australian Rules Football. Jy Bond played at the semi-professional level.
