Mets coach won’t face discipline for racial slur

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen won’t face repercussions for using a racial slur for Asians in the clubhouse Monday.

Warthen issued a statement Wednesday apologizing for using the word “Chinaman” while speaking to Jeff Cutler, the Japanese-American interpreter for Daisuke Matsuzaka and a Chinese-American reporter from The Wall Street Journal. On Thursday, Warthen apologized again.

“I’ve already made the apologies to all the appropriate people,” Warthen said. “I don’t think there are any ill feelings by any of the people in this room. I made a mistake. I live up to it. It will not happen again.”

When asked if there would be any punishment for Warthen, GM Sandy Alderson would only say: “I’ve got nothing to add or say about it.”

Warthen will be with the Mets when they travel to Viera to face the Nationals at 1:10 p.m.
