Lady breadwinners: the stats

Women have come a long way, baby! Using data from several different studies, we took a look at the numbers to see how times have changed.

* In 2007, 22 percent of men were married to women who earned more than they did. In 1970, it was only 4 percent of men (Pew Research, 2010).

* In 1970, 28 percent of wives had husbands who were more educated than they were. In 2007, it dropped to 19 percent of wives who had husbands with more schooling (Pew Research, 2010).

* Women’s earnings grew 44 percent from 1970 to 2007, compared to 6 percent for men (Pew Research, 2010).

* In 1967, women made up just over one-third (35.3 percent) of the American workforce. As of July 2009, nearly half of all American workers were women (The Shriver Report, 2009).

* Sixty-nine percent of women think men resent women who have more power than they do — but only 49 percent of men agree

(Rockefeller/Time poll, 2009).

* Women make 80 percent of the buying decisions in American homes (The Shriver Report, 2009).
