Dolphin dies a day after washing up on LI beach

A dolphin that washed up on a Long Island beach Thursday died this morning after its health worsened, officials said.

“Unfortunately, the dolphin died this morning,” a Riverhead Marine Foundation spokesman told The Post.

The death came after animal-rescue workers rushed to its aid, saving the bleeding and struggling mammal from drowning in the surf.

Long Island Parks Police said beachgoers spotted the 5½-foot-long dolphin getting battered by waves at Gilgo Beach, just east of Jones Beach, at 4:15 p.m.

Authorities called the Riverhead Marine Foundation, whose marine biologists rushed to the scene, according to staffer Rob DiGiovanno.

The animal, a common dolphin, had suffered wounds near its tail, said cops who also arrived at the scene.

Nassau Emergency Services Sgt. Richard Doerler said his staff had just the thing to lift the heavy dolphin into a rescue vehicle — a vinyl blanket typically used to move the largest of human patients.
