Dispatches from the campaign trail

Gop comptroller candidate Harry Wilson is campaigning jointly with Republican attorney-general candidate Dan Donovan in the final days before the election.

And noticeably absent is GOP gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino.

Both Donovan — the Staten Island DA — and Wilson have slammed Paladino for his anti-gay comments, over which he later apologized.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie regularly bawls out his state Legislature — and now he’s dressing down late-night talk-show host Jimmy Fallon.

Regarding Christie’s decision to halt the cross-river train-tunnel project, Fallon joked, “New Yorkers will have to get to New Jersey the same way as always — by accident.”

Christie tweeted, “Why don’t u come across the river on purpose and I’ll give u a tour.”

GOP congressman wannabe Michael Grimm got a surprise Tuesday when he showed up to debate Staten Island incumbent Michael McMahon.

McMahon’s camp sat Grimm’s ex-wife and her family in the front row, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Former President Bill Clinton tried to convince Florida Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek to drop his Senate bid and throw his support behind Gov. Charlie Crist, it was reported yesterday.

Meek said he spoke to Clinton, but called the Politico.com report “inaccurate, at best.”

Meek is mired in third place — behind Republican Marco Rubio and Crist, a former Republican running as an independent. Meek’s support could tip the election in Crist’s favor, Politico said.
