GOLF: Tiger finishes Tour season winless

Tiger Woods finished his PGA Tour season without a win for the first time in his career after his sixth-place showing in the HSBC Champions at Sheshan International in Shanghai. Woods shots a 68 on the final day of competition as he finished 13 shots behind. In an exquisite duel with Lee Westwood that came down to the last putt, Francesco Molinari played bogey-free for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot victory in tournament.

AUTO RACING: Hamlin takes Chase lead

Denny Hamlin won at Texas for the second time this season to take over the lead in the closest three-way Chase for the Sprint Cup yet with two races left. Jimmie Johnson carried a 14-point lead into Texas, but leaves in second place — 33 behind Hamlin. Kevin Harvick is third, 59 points behind Hamlin.

ETC.: Tigers re-sign Peralta

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta has agreed to an $11.25 million, two-year contract with the Tigers, a person familiar with the contract said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced.

* Iona Prep defeated rival Fordham Prep, 1-0, at Belson Stadium to win the first CHSAA Class A intersectional soccer title in school history. “We pretty much just made a dynasty,” said Cesar Ceja, who scored the game’s lone goal in the 24th minute. “After we leave, I doubt there will be a better team than what we had the last three years.” Iona Prep (12-3-5) will get a chance to defend its CHSAA state title, taking on Long Island champion Chaminade in the semifinals Thursday at St. John’s. Fordham Prep, which made its fourth trip to the CHSAA Class A intersectional final in five years, ends its season 14-2-3.
