Amtrak derailment forces LIRR to cancel trains

An Amtrak derailment was set to cause headaches for New York commuters on the Long Island Rail Road today.

A train traveling from Washington, D.C., to Boston experienced a “low speed derailment” east of Penn Station in New York City around 12:25 local time Monday, the rail service said.

Nearly 150 passengers were on board at the time and were transferred to another train shortly after 2:00pm. There were no reported injuries.

Amtrak said in a statement released at 4:15 that the East River tunnels, which connect the island of Manhattan with Long Island, were not blocked and trains were operating in the area with minimal delays.

Around the same time, the LIRR announced that about 15 of its eastbound rush hour trains had been canceled “due to an Amtrak derailment that is blocking one of the East River Tunnels.” The service changes were to affect the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma branches.
